It's December and as a devotee to all things Holiday I
thought I'd roll out some of my favorite Christmas/Winter music throughout the
month. Check back every day for tracks old, new, classic and unique. Happy
Holidays!
Reba McEntire's first holiday album Merry Christmas To You is a treasure. Not just because the cover is #glamour...
...but because Reba's voice is Christmas miracle and the songs are just great.
The stand out for me is a spoken word track, written by Helen Steiner Rice and also recorded by Grandpa Jones, Johnny Cash and Andy Griffith, called "The Christmas Guest." It's a beautiful tale, a variation on a legend as old as Christianity, of a man who believes Jesus is coming to visit him for Christmas but is instead visited by vagabonds and lost children. In the end, Jesus reveals that what he did for these people, he did for Him. It's a lovely sentiment during a frazzled time of year.
Further listening: "Happy Birthday, Jesus (I'll Open This One For You)" - Reba McIntire (for that kid saying "yay! Auntie Reba!" at the end, mostly.)
